Georgia State Visits App State for Education Day

BOONE, N.C. – The App State women’s basketball team is set to host Georgia State for its Education Day game on Thursday at noon. Admission is free for all fans and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+. The Mountaineers will be welcoming students from 15 area schools in the High Country. 

Last Time Out
The Mountaineers fell short to Coastal Carolina, 70-67, in Conway on Feb. 4. Redshirt senior Janay Sanders netted her 1,000th collegiate career point and matched her single-game high 26 points. Junior Faith Alston and sophomore Zada Porter scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, while redshirt junior A’Lea Gilbert pulled down a whopping 12 rebounds.

Around the Conference
Carver remains the leader of the league in 3-point percentage (.494) and made 3-pointers per game (averaging 3.5 per game) in league play and ranks second for 3-pointers made per game for the season. She also stands sixth in the SBC for field goal percentage (.480) in league play and scoring, averaging 16.1 points per SBC game. 

  App State stands second in the league for 3-pointers made for league-only play and for the season as a whole. The Mountaineers also stand third in the SBC for team 3-point percentage in conference play (.337). The Mountaineers stand fourth in the league for steals made in conference play, fifth in the league in scoring for the season overall and sixth for scoring in league-only play. 

Last Time Against Georgia State
On Jan. 26, the Mountaineers fell to Georgia State, 64-56, in Atlanta. Sanders and Carver scored double figures, with Sanders netting 20 points and Carver netting 14. Carver went 3-of-5 from the 3-point line and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Sanders matched Bigott for the team-high of five rebounds and Alston dished out a team-high seven assists. 

Scouting Georgia State
Georgia State is 10-15 (4-8 SBC) this season. Since their game against App State, the Panthers defeated James Madison (Jan. 28) before beginning a four-game road trip that has resulted in losses at Georgia Southern (Feb. 2) and Marshall (Feb. 4) so far. 

  Mikyla Tolivert and Deasia Merrill are the Panthers’ top scorers, averaging 14.6 and 13.7 points per game, respectively. Merrill also averages a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. Tolivert dishes out an average 2.9 assists per game, staying close behind the team’s assists leader, Mya Byrd, who averages 3.0 per game.

The Mountaineers are set to host Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. on Saturday for their Play4Kay Pink Game. There will be an auction benefiting the High Country Breast Cancer Foundation on the concourse level as well as the return of Chuck-A-Duck during halftime of the game. The App State field hockey, volleyball, soccer, and cheer teams will be on the concourse signing autographs for App State’s exclusive National Girls & Women in Sports Day poster. The women’s basketball team will be available for autographs after the game as well.
