Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian foreign ministry, has proposed deploying a Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) mission at the border area between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“We express our condolences on the occasion of the Armenian servicemen’s death in Sotk village [of Armenia], and call on the parties to refrain from such actions that increase the escalation, tension and, even more, lead to human casualties. This tragic incident once again confirmed the low productiveness of the EU [monitoring] mission deployed in Armenia,” Zakharova said at Tuesday’s press briefing.
According to her, it is necessary to pay attention to the implementation of constant rhythmic work in the delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, with the Russian advisory assistance and simultaneous implementation of complex confidence-building measures.
“We are also in favor of deploying a CSTO mission in the border region, and here, of course, the ball is already in Yerevan’s court. The other members of the [aforesaid] organization have expressed readiness for such a move,” Zakharova added.
